I always looked at Robert as invincible. This news has shaken my world. Though I know we are all mortal, Robert always seemed larger than life in my eyes. He and the Levin family were more than kind to me. Robert believed in me when many did not. I am grateful for having the chance to know him and be a part of such a great company.

Robert you will be missed. I met Robert years ago while working for RJ Marketing Ltd. I loved to be there for him and he hated the fact that I knew what his store and what his customers needed. He was a wonderful man and father and loved his family...they were always first. Prayers and sympathy from the Nickens Family in Arizona. <3

i worked at Washington Music for a week about 40 years ago. A week later Robert worked at Manny's Music for a week. Typical Robert, while running for some stock, he somehow "dropped" the full set of store keys down the elevator shaft - of course accidentally.
I've been thinking about him for weeks and my thoughts are with everyone.

To the Washington Music Center Family,
From the time that Chuck introduced me to his son and told me that Robert would be taking care of me as a customer from then on, I have considered my relationship with Robert to be more than just business but a true friendship. I not only trusted Robert to "take care of me" but I have truly enjoyed and will always treasure the many years of association with both Robert and the entire Levin family.
I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the family and on behalf of my family and the Perfect Sound family, we will really miss Robert, may he rest in peace.

We heard the news this morning. Our hearts go out to you. Its so unfair. He had so much to live for and kids who need a father.

As you know your parents meant a lot to us. I think of Chuck all the time. Sam has been trying to get tickets for us to fly down and pay our respects, but so far no luck. The day before Thanksgiving is a bad time to get last minute flights.

We are with you in spirit and hope to see you soon.

Nov 26, 2013 04:22 PM

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Robert's passing. It was he who took that first phone call I made to the store back in 1981 as a kid from the tip of Texas who had heard of this awesome music store in Wheaton, MD. He was so full of knowledge and always made me feel like a friend instead of a customer. It was Robert who referred me over to Dick Bardt at the drum counter who also became more of a friend than my salesperson. I was fortunate enough in my travels to drop in one day and finally get to meet Robert in person and to find out that Dick was in the hospital in Baltimore. It was great to get to visit with Robert face to face that day and meet and chat with Dick as well. Two great people who had more of an impact on my life than they could ever imagine. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and know that the Levin family will be in my prayers. From way down on the tip of Texas in Los Fresnos. Paul Pederson

Robert and I always had each other's back through the good and bad times of our thirty five years together. We grew up, got married, had kids, & got divorced....together. I've known Robert since he was 12 years old. One day at work we decided on impulse to go skiing. We got in his BMW and after spinning out on a back country road T about 65 mph I told him while I had never been on skis, nothing that mountain could throw t me could be more exciting than skidding to a stop with my door less than a foot from the stone foundation of the old barn we almost hit. I dropped my poles getting on the ski lift so T the top of the hill he gave me his. When we (I) finally got to the bottom, he ws a greAt skier and got down just fine without poles, he was sticking his Walkman in his pocket. I asked why. He said he liked listening to the Stones while skiing to get his rhythm flowing but after listening to me screaming hysterically he felt that was more entertaining. Robert was a good and trusted friend to me and all musicians. I am still I'm shock, my love and sincerest condolences to all the Levin family. Robert will be sincerely sadly and longly missed

Robert was one of the smartest guys in the Music Store and Pro Audio businesses. Business school and street smarts! Taken so quickly and young it, is hard to believe he will no longer be with us. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

For over thirty years I have appreciated Robert's support, humor, and enthusiasm, and could always count on him to really tell me like it is. We are so sad in Dallas. Born into a family of great accomplishment, Robert moved humbly into a position of respected leadership and excellence. He made his family proud, and he was more proud of his family, especially his kids. I have wonderful memories of a great man, and I'm so appreciative that he took the time to visit. It was my pleasure to have called on Chuck's as a mfr's rep for a dozen or so years. Robert's "bark" was just that, I never got bitten. When I first moved to the area, it was rumored that Robert would "chew up and spit out" reps. More accurately, Robert had a very low threshold for B.S. And excuses, B.S. "radar" if you will. I always did my best to earn his thoughtful attention and, while I won't claim to be part of the inner circle, Robert always made me feel welcome and an important part of the Chuck's Family. Robert, you are leaving us much too soon. You will be missed. Our family's thoughts and prayers go out to the Levin family.

I was indeed shocked to hear of Robert's passing-gone much too soon.. His sense of humor certainly lifted the spirit of the sales floor while I was there. I could see he was devoted to the store, and he has passed that on to his children, which will help to keep a family retail tradition alive-something that is needed today and is getting hard to find. My sympathy to his wife and children, and also to Alan, Abbé, and Nadine. My prayers are with you all. God bless you. Rest In Peace Robert..

I will never forget Roberts support during my employment at WPS when my daughter became gravely ill. I spent weeks in the hospital and never worried about my job. The candy and lolly pops from WPS were very much appreciated by my daughter when she turned around. In spite of moving on in my professional life my tenure at WPS was filled with warm and treasured memories of the employees and Roberts family. I count my experiences then as a privilege and enriching part of my life.

I pray Robert finds rest in the hope of God's promise along with the deepest sympathy for his family and friends who are grieving his loss.

On my first day at Audio Associates my boss Joe Blacker told me that if Robert ever called I better make darn sure that I put him through. To say the least I was really nervous and totally scared of messing up. I had no experience in this field and I really needed the job. So when the call came I was so relieved when he called me "sweetheart", told me that i was doing an excellent job and that he would always be my ally if I ever had any problems with JB! For the last fifteen years I have spoken to my friend Robert almost every working day and I can't even tell you just how much I am going to miss him. My thought and prayers are with his family and everyone at Washington Music and WPS.

Shocking and such sad news. Worked with the entire Levin Family for 16 incredibly exciting and educational years where they gave so much to all. I got to know Robert shortly after his graduation from college and in a lot of ways got to grow up together in the business community. While I have stayed in touch on an intermittent basis I know that (without actually being there) that Robert instilled to his children the loving values that he was taught by his parents and lived by. Alan and Abbe I wish you the inner strength through this challenging period.

The Levin family has been an important and inspirational part of my professional and personal life since I started in business back in 1975. They are one of the three families who pioneered and drove the music retail business in the USA, the others of course being the Ash’s and Goldrich’s, and who gave young punks like me a shot. Talking with Robert was always a learning experience and I valued his calls and advice. He was much like his Dad in his toughness with business issues but showed compassion for you as a person. I will miss him a lot and will pray for his family and children during this very difficult time.

When I first met Robert over 30 years ago in the store, he, for reasons I still cannot fathom, immediately started treating me and my family like his own.....and continued to do so for the rest of his life. In many ways, he was carrying on the tradition of his mother and father, but the way he managed to keep our business interactions personal and loving was unique in my experience. He was a friend that could always be counted on, in every way imaginable.

I am having great difficulty with his sudden absence, and I want his children, whom he so clearly adored, along with the rest of his family, to understand how dearly he was loved, and how many people feel this loss in the same way that I do.

We mourn his passing deeply, yet still feel the love that he spread so strongly.

I also know that, if you need it, all of us will also always be there for you as Robert was for us.

Robert was like a brother to me. We shared a whole spectrum of emotions between each other. We had some incredibly joyous times with our families and co-workers and we had some fierce disagreements as well. Through all of that I always felt that Robert and the whole Levin family always my family like their family.

The day I announced my leaving from WPS was a profoundly emotional time for me as I knew it was time to move on to a new stage in my life. I also knew I would be leaving behind a family that I had grown to love for over seventeen years.

I can never repay the Levin family for everything they had done for me, but hopefully one day I will somehow be able to return a small portion of their incredible charity as Robert had come to exemplify.

Always in our memory.

I’ve been a customer of Robert’s for over thirty years starting out in the Washington Music Center in my younger rock n’ roll days and then on to Washington Professional Services as the purchaser of audiovisual equipment for large organizations. But Robert made me feel so much more than a client and he was much, much more than a vendor to me. Robert was a true friend with a ready smile, always asking about my family and trading stories about our lives and children. Family was so important to Robert, whether that meant personal families or the extended professional family of employees, customers, and industry folks - or really whomever he came to know. This is an old fashioned value, which is not commonly seen today, and something we should all try to emulate. Robert was a dear friend whose life ended far too early and I will sorely miss him.

The last interaction of any note that took place between me and Robert happened shortly before his diagnosis. We talked about the design of a branded Washington Music Center calendar and he was genuinely excited about it. He said something about "...John Phillip Souza's birthday or whatever!" It hurts that now November 25th will be one of the important dates to denote.

My favorite memory of Robert took place during a typical afternoon at the music store, standing at his desk. I asked him if he had ever seen the movie Blazing Saddles and he halted the multiple things he was doing at once, and looked up to gave me a spontaneous 45-second dissertation on the merits of Mel Brooks and that movie in particular. He referred to it as "a seminal film!" It makes me smile whenever I think about it. I miss him already.

Condolences, everybody

We were shocked to just hear of the passing of Robert. It seems way to soon. My wife and I send our thoughts and prayers out to him and his family in this sad time. Cat and I have been customers at Washington Music since I can't remember when. I always remember seeing Robert in the store when I came in to make a purchase. I still own and play the same drum set I bought there in 1975. And our band is still using the same p.a. system (mainly just for rehearsal in the basement of our home) that we purchased I think at least 20 years ago. I always thought of him as an important part of the musical community along with his Mom and Dad. He will be greatly missed.

Dec 3, 2013 11:14 AM

We are in shock having just heard the news of Robert's passing. Along with Robert goes a chunk of my youth having worked Pro Sound at WMC for almost 8 years. Chuck hired me in 1983 to move across the country (I was living in TX at the time although I am a native New Yorker) and work Pro Sound at Washington Music. The first day Robert informed me that I would be working in the keyboard department of which I knew nothing about (I don't play keyboards at all!). When they finally pried my fingers out from around his neck, I realized this kid was a force to be reckoned with. He eventually realized that kicking me out of the Sound Room every day was a fruitless task and he let me be and we warmed up to each other. He was one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry and once I got past his exterior manner I realized that Robert was also one of the warmest people I knew. Our condolences go out to the family and everyone that ever really knew Robert. We are so sad.

Robert was a customer, a competitor, and an industry mentor for me over the years which I knew him. The picture shows the smile he often led with when you met him. You just had to figure out what is revealed each time. When last we spoke he recanted stories of his children to a table of people that could only smile and feel the pride he had in them and the joy that they brought. Robert you will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to his family and WPS Staff
